Lotus roots are regarded as cold nature which can eliminate internal heat and cools down the blood. It is good for patients who are in thirsty and hemoptysis due to its sweet taste and juiciness. Tannin contained in lotus roots is good for patients who are in poor or loss appetite because of its positive effect in the spleen, which can stop diarrhea, increase appetite and accelerate digestion. Lotus roots contain rich calcium, iron, plant protein, vitamins and starch which can enhance qi, blood, and immunity. Lotus roots contain dietary fiber and mucin protein which can be combined with cholate of the human body, triglyceride of food and cholesterol in order to eliminate absorbing fat. Rich tannic acid contained in lotus roots can contract the blood vessel, which can effectively stop bleeding.
Lotus roots should not be eaten with chrysanthemum at the same time since it may cause gastric discomfort. Women who are in pregnancy should avoid eating lotus roots because of its cold nature. Although eating lotus roots is crisp and refreshing, it is not good for the operation of spleen and stomach as it may cause indigestion. Lotus roots that are in full shape, fat and short size, with brown colour skin and without smelly are recommended to be purchased. Lotus roots would be juicy if its holes are bigger.
