  • Most cost effective to buy vegetables, melon and fruits according to seasons as they are fresh and inexpensive.
  • Seasonal melon and fruits in summer are bitter melon, winter melon, sheng melon, cucumber, beans, papaya, watermelon, cherry, pineapple and mango etc.  Vegetables may include Amaranth and Ipomoea Aquatica.
  • Seasonal vegetables in winter include cabbage, kale, spinach, Indian lettuce, broccoli, pes sprouts and Chinese cabbage.  Others include tomato, taro, white radish and citrus fruits.
  • Stock up fruits and vegetables that can be kept for a longer period, such as carrot, pumpkin, onion, celery, Chinese cabbage etc, which can be used as ingredients for different dishes everyday.
  • Some shops provide ready-cut melon and vegetables, meat and prepared soup packs, which can reduce the time and effort for preparation.  Pay attention to the expiry date and quality of food to ensure food safety.
  • There are pre-washed vegetables available in the market for your convenience.  Although they have been washed, it is better to rinse them once more before use.
  • Avoid peeled and rotten fruit, buy just enough amount and proportion.
  • Remember to separate fruits and vegetables from raw meat and seafood to avoid cross contamination.
  • Remove the moist on the vegetable surface and wrap it with clean kitchen paper to keep in the refrigerator for no more than two days for freshness.
  • Wash the vegetables with diluted salt water.
  • Washed and cut vegetables should be cooked immediately to avoid loss of nutrition and affecting the quality.
  • Fruit should be stored in the vegetables and fruits compartment in the refrigerator.
  • Use different cutting boards and knives for fruits, vegetables and raw meat.
  • Wash the fruit with running tap water before eating.
  • Cut fruit should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours.  If the food is not eaten immediately, it should be plastic wrapped and put in the refrigerator at once.
  • Strawberries can first be rinsed in apple cider vinegar and drained dry before storing away in the refrigerator. This can extend the fresh-keeping period.
  • Wrap the head of a bunch of bananas with plastic wrap to prolong the fresh-keeping period.
