Built around 1900, the Hong Kong Visual Arts Center, otherwise known as vA!, was restructured from an early 20th-century building called Cassels Block and is now listed as a Grade 1 historic building. Cassels Block was part of the former barracks for married British officers of Victoria Barracks during the colonial times, hence the 19th Century Edwardian revival style. It used four stairs to accommodate the gradient of the slope.
vA! is now used as a venue for encouraging local art creation. It provides studios for creating ceramics, sculptures and printmaking art. It also organizes various art courses, activities, and artist exchange programs each month to participate and develop their artistic skills.
The center also focuses on providing professional and sophisticated art studios for full-time, amateur artists or even art-lovers for artistic creation. These studios include multi-purpose, ceramic, sculpture and printmaking studios. And while the multi-purpose studios offer equipment for holding events such as art classes and conferences, the ceramic, print and sculpture rooms are also equipped with various advanced tools and machines for artists to use.
