Built in 1908 with and are of 1.7 acres, the site was originally a slaughterhouse used for cattle quarantine and slaughter center for over 90 years. In 1999, it was moved to Sheung Shui and the building complex was given to artists by the government. The artists then renamed the place “Cattle Depot Artist Village.” The depot comprises of red-brick buildings with pointed roofs, with much characteristics of Western markets of the beginning of the 20th century. The Village was only partially open to public. Those who visit needs an invitation and ID number registered. Since it was taken over by the Development Bureau in 2011, it has been officially open to public.
