Jao Tsung-I Academy

Former Lai Chi Kok Hospital, this is a Grade III Historic Building. The complex is built on a slope surrounded with greens, giving it a obscured location. The site sat on the sea front before reclamation around Mei Fu and Lai Chi Kok area, and was once a custom port set up by the Qing dynasty. In 1900, the labour’s dormitory of The Chamber of Mines Labour Importation Agency left us the early structures of the site.  It was then used as quarantine stations, military barracks etc., and became the Lai Chi Kok Internment Camp in 1924. The camp was closed upon the establishment of Stanley prison in 1937, and became an infectious disease center and sanatorium. As number of leprosy patients declined, the center was altered to serve long-term psychiatric patients. [TN: The patients of Lai chi Kok Hospital were relocated to] the Caritas Jockey Club Lai King Rehabilitation Center in 2005, and the Hospital was returned to the government. It was chosen as one of the buildings of the first batch of the Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme in 2008 by the Development Bureau. The Hong Kong Institution for Promotion of Chinese Culture is directly responsible with the restoration, revitalization and daily operation.

After revitalizing,  the premises also house the Heritage Lodge, open for booking to stay and enjoy the cultural atmosphere of the Academy.
The Academy offers guided tours for free with reservation by visitors or groups. The guides will take visitors to The Gallery and Heritage Hall, sharing the academic achievements of Professor Jeo Tsung-I and the changes and architectural characteristics of the site.
