Deep Bay (or Shenzhen Bay) is a bay located between Hong Kong and Shenzhen to the northwest of Hong Kong. The local Cantonese name of the bay is Hau Hoi Wan, which means ‘back (sea) bay’. It is opposite to another bay, Tsin Hoi Wan, which means ‘front (sea) bay’, on the other side of Nantau Peninsula. The Deep Bay area is home to one of the most biodiverse wetlands in Asia, with an area of 2,700 hectares, providing a natural habitat for a variety of wildlife. At the heart of the Deep Bay area lies Mai Po Marshes, which is an internationally important Ramsar site and a part of the Mai Po Nature Reserve, which covers Tai Long Kei, Shek Shan and Tsim Bei Tsui. A lot of migratory birds from northern China and Siberia spend winter in the bay.
